FAQ

Questions, answered straight.

Including the ones about money, memories and safety.

Students

What is Shutter?

A photo app where everyone in the country gets the same drop at the same second. You have 2 minutes to post a photo from your front and back camera at once. Posting unlocks your friends' posts for that drop.

When do shutters happen?

At a random minute, on random days, at least 4 times a week. Nobody knows when, including us. It can be any hour, so use your phone's Focus or Do Not Disturb at night. Shutter notifications never break through Focus.

What if I miss the 2 minutes?

You can still post until the next shutter. Your post shows how late it was, and it still counts for your streak and your school.

What if a shutter happens during class or while I'm driving?

Don't post. Never post while driving. Post late when it's safe. Late posts count.

How do streaks work?

Your streak is the number of shutters in a row you answered, on time or late. Miss one and it resets to zero. Streaks are never for sale, and there are no restores.

Who sees my posts?

Only friends you've added, and only for the current shutter, and only after they've posted too. No strangers, no public feed, no friends-of-friends.

How do I add friends?

By exact username, by scanning their QR code, by joining the same team or club code, or from Friends of your friends (people who share at least 2 friends with you). There's no search and no contact-book upload. Every request needs a yes.

Who can find me?

Only people with your exact username or QR, your teammates, and people who share at least 2 friends with you. Those suggestions show just your username and the number of mutual friends, never your photos. Turn suggestions off in Settings, Privacy.

What are Memories?

Your own private calendar of your posts. They stay until you delete them, and you can save any of them to your phone at any time.

How does the school scoreboard work?

Pick your school when you sign up. Once a school has 10 members, it shows on the weekly scoreboard. The score is the share of shutters answered by members. It resets every Sunday, and there's a monthly winner. It only shows school names and numbers, never students.

Can I import photos or use filters?

No. Photos come from the camera in the moment, with one look: film grain and an orange date stamp. Retakes are allowed, and your friends can see how many you took.

Is Shutter for everyone?

Shutter is for people 16 and older. If you're younger, please wait. If we learn an account belongs to someone under 16, we delete it and its data.

Parents

What age is Shutter for?

16 and older. Sign-up requires confirming this with a checkbox, and on iPhone we also check Apple's age range signal where it's available. We do not collect birthdates.

Who can see my teen's photos?

Only accepted friends, only for the current shutter, and only after those friends have posted. There is no public profile, no stranger discovery and no messaging. Friends of friends never see photos.

Can strangers find my teen?

There is no search. People who share at least 2 friends with your teen may see their username as a suggestion (no photos), and your teen can turn that off in Settings. Every friend request needs their approval.

What data do you collect?

An email address for sign-in, a username, an optional school and team, and the photos your teen posts. No birthdate, no phone contacts, no location. Location and other photo metadata are removed before upload.

Are there ads?

No tracking ads, ever. Local businesses can sponsor a school's scoreboard page with a clearly labeled line. Sponsors never get any user data and nobody is targeted.

What does it cost?

Nothing. Shutter is free and has no in-app purchases. It's paid for by clearly labeled posts from local businesses, which never use your data to target you.

Shutters can happen at night?

Yes, any hour. Shutter notifications are normal priority, so Focus and Do Not Disturb silence them. We show every new user a note suggesting they use Focus to sleep. Late posts count, so there's no reason to wake up.

How do you keep it safe?

Every photo is screened before friends see it. Every post and profile has report and block buttons. We review reports within 24 hours. Anyone, with or without an account, can ask us to remove an intimate image, and we act within 48 hours.

How do I get my teen's account removed?

Your teen can delete their account in Settings, which deletes their photos from storage. You can also email our safety address and we'll help.

Coaches & clubs

Why would a team use this?

It's a low-effort way to see what your team is up to, together, a few times a week. Teams also compete for their school on the weekly scoreboard.

How do I get my team on?

Create a team code, then share the QR flyer. Players scan or type it to join. Teammates show up in a list where they can add each other with one tap; every friend request still needs the other person to accept.

Do I need permission from the school?

We recommend telling your athletic director or club sponsor. We include a ready-to-send permission letter template.

Can I see my players' photos?

Only if you're 16+, have an account, and they accept you as a friend, like anyone else. We recommend coaches don't friend players.

Schools

Is this affiliated with my school?

No. School names are shown as plain text only. We never use school logos or mascots.

Does the scoreboard show students?

Never. It shows school names, percentages and total posts. A school only appears once it has 10 members.

Can a school opt out?

Yes. Email us from a school address and we'll remove your school from public scoreboard pages.

What about phones in class?

Late posting is allowed and counts, so students never need to post during class. Our onboarding says so.

Sponsors

What do sponsors get?

A clearly labeled 'Presented by' line with your name and logo on a school's scoreboard page, the Sunday scoreboard image, and (on higher packages) School Cup pages and share cards.

Can we target students?

No. There is no targeting and no tracking. Your sponsorship appears on the school pages you choose. You never receive user data.

Does sponsoring help a school's score?

Never. Money of any kind never affects scores.

How do we pay?

By invoice, business to business. Students never pay sponsors or see payment flows.

What businesses can't sponsor?

Alcohol, tobacco, vaping, cannabis, gambling and betting, firearms, adult content, dating, weight-loss, cosmetic surgery, payday loans and crypto.
